What is the NAMFT?

The Nevada Association for Marriage and Family Therapy (NAMFT) is the Nevada division of the American Association for Marriage and Family Therapy. NAMFT is the professional association for the field of marriage and family therapy in Nevada.

NAMFT represents the professional interests of its members throughout Nevada. Since its inception, NAMFT has been promoting the field of marriage and family therapy as an alliance with traditional methods of mental health services. This is accomplished through public relations campaigns, initiation and promotion of mental health-related legislation, and collaboration and cooperation with other mental health associations. NAFMT conducts regular workshops and classes for its members to assist them in improving skills and practices. It also hosts an annual convention during which expert speakers address the latest updates in theory and practice.

NAMFT is comprised of more than 470 mental health practitioners. Its members meet rigorous standards for education and training and are held to the highest ethical standards of the profession. Clinical members have met the highest standards for education and clinical experience. Associate and student membership categories are available for therapists in training for clinical practice. Members of allied professions and other persons who are interested in marriage and family therapy are eligible to become affiliate members.

Members of NAMFT work in communities throughout Nevada. They are in private practice, employee assistance programs, hospitals, community mental health centers, social service agencies, managed care organizations, courts, academic positions, religious organizations, state and local government, and public and private schools. Members also play an advocacy role on such issues as child welfare, child development, family violence and other public policy issues.

Members are often called as expert commentators by various media outlets. They participate in community service in a variety of ways, including participating in disaster planning and response. Many members are trained trauma experts.

This Web site is designed to communicate with NAMFT members and to provide information to the public.
